Somalia Opens Tender for 10 MW Hybrid Solar Project with Battery Storage
Somalia''s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources has launched a significant tender for a large-scale hybrid solar and battery energy storage project in northeastern Somalia.
The DG emphasized the commitment of the Somali government to collaborate with internal institutions, such as the World Bank, and engage private investments to reduce electricity prices in the country.
In response to this question, the Project Coordinator has elaborated the overall project implementation arrangements and stated the fact that the project will be implemented by the MoEWR, FGS in Mogadishu and Somaliland Ministry of Energy in close coordination with the FMS, ESPs and the other line Ministries such as planning and Finance.
Somalia's capacity to generate and transmit power is largely weak and ineffective. As of 2020, the total estimated installed capacity in the major load centers of the country was about 138 MW which is inadequate to serve current and future demand.
In addition to the state level environmental policies and regulations. Regarding a follow-up question on the existing Somali electricity regulation; the PIUs has responded that the electricity regulator is not established, currently the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources exercises this mandate to act as a regulator.
