The present-day tele-space is incomplete without the base stations as these constitute an important part of the modern-day scheme
Iceland uses FM radio broadcasts, all stations are also available over internet radio, with some smaller stations being only distributed over internet radio. Nationwide networks which cover the whole country include public radio stations Rás 1 and Rás 2 as well as Bylgjan.
Iceland Radio offers satellite communication service to aircrafts through IRIDIUM and IMMARSAT. When HF conditions deteriorate, a satellite communication can be applied. If the aircraft is equipped with a satellite phone on board, pilots can call Iceland Radio centre when necessary.
Voice communications with aircrafts (Aeronautical Mobile Service - AMS). AFTN/AMHS message system Com Centre (Aeronautical Fixed Service - AFS). Iceland Radio's main operation is aeronautical voice communication, which requires considerable human resource.
On 01 January 1993, the Base Communications Office was officially transferred from NAS Keflavik to the operational and administrative control of NCTS Iceland. This move represented the Navy's continuing effort to centralize base support functions with appropriate service providers within appropriate Host-Tenant relationships.
