Ottawa approves new regulation for battery storage
A city committee has passed new regulations establishing land use policy for companies looking to build battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Ottawa.
In 2025, the City of Ottawa established official plan and zoning provisions for battery energy storage uses in accordance with new Official Plan policy. BESS is an emerging technology using batteries and associated equipment to store excess energy from the electrical grid, which can then discharge energy in periods of high demand.
With files from CTV News Ottawa's Kimberley Fowler A proposed battery energy storage site in the city's rural west end was at the center of discussion during an open house on Sunday, with concerned residents coming to heads with the company spearheading the project.

It will also be required to install fire prevention and suppression systems.
