Greece is getting rewired for the future

Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has revealed that a new grid line linking mainland Greece to Crete began operating on May 24.
The electrical interconnection between Crete and mainland Greece was completed and has been in operation since May 2025. The completion of this infrastructure project is a big step in Greece's energy transition.
That project connected Crete to mainland Greece via a line with 2×200 megavolt-amperes (MVA) transport capacity. The Ariadne Interconnection marks Greece's first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system.
