Austria's leading electricity company operates around 130 hydro power plants, including highly efficient storage power plants in the Austrian Alps and run-of-river power plants on all the country's major rivers. At 33.7% (2024), transport is the economic sector with the largest consumption of energy in Austria.
With over 3,000 hydro energy plants in operation, in 2021 Hydro power provided 14.1 GW and accounted for 54% of Austria's total installed power generation capacity and 58% of total power generation. Hydro power in the summer of 2022 has generated less power, due to water shortages, due to climate changes.
Austria's last coal-fired power plant closed back in 2020. Austria has a highly reliable electricity supply network – thanks mainly to a diversified mix of energy sources which ensures that generating capacity can be put to optimum use at any time. In Austria, hydropower is one of the most widely used means of generating electricity.
