Europe's score on the network pillar highlights the need to accelerate the deployment of 5G base stations (with 11 of the 15 European countries included in the 5GI scoring lower than 30 on this indicator). Europe fares better on coverage: 24 European countries reported over 90% 5G population coverage by the end of 2024.
The deployment and adoption of 5G SA in Europe remain sluggish, increasing slowly from a very low base and further widening the region's gap with North America and Asia. Spain stands out as a clear leader in 5G SA deployment, reaching an 8% Speedtest® sample share compared with the EU average of just 1.3% as of Q2 2025.
This is a critical moment for Europe. Recent reports by Enrico Letta and Mario Draghi have given insight into the growing gap between Europe and other regions, but also direction for how to address them, with investments in advanced 5G connectivity being a vital component.
